Love Letters Across the Strait:
Endearment and Life for the Chinese in Canada
by Adrienne S. Chan with Anthony B. Chan and Lian D. Chan
This book is about the engagement and courtship of two Chinese Canadians in 1931 and 1932, based on the letters between the young couple. The story of the courtship is between two people who integrated fully into Canadian society, as Canadian born Chinese. The social context is within a time period when Chinese exclusion was in place (enacted in 1923), and the Great Depression, in which economic and social despair were prominent factors in people’s lives. In spite of this, love prevailed in the future hope of two young Chinese Canadians.
